Shuttered Cobbs Creek $65 million makeover to begin in the spring. Closed the last several years because of fire and flooding, the 105-year-old Cobbs Creek Golf Course will get a $65 million restoration complete with a new community and education center, Philadelphia officials announced Wednesday.

The money was raised by the nonprofit Cobbs Creek Foundation to not only restore the main clubhouse but to create new “high-quality public space for all Philadelphians.” Construction is expected to begin this spring.

Officials say the course, when complete, will generate tax revenue for the city through creation of more than 150 jobs. Of those, 120 jobs will support the golf course, and 16 will support the community and education center.

With a little help from a few friends: How the Cobbs Creek restoration began. From Inquirer Archives, circa 2008:

Nine days ago, in a 10th-floor conference room in the offices of the Fairmount Park Commission, a handful of golfers calling themselves "Friends of Cobbs Creek" sat down to pitch an idea for the future of the city-owned golf course.

"We’d like to restore Cobbs Creek," Mike Cirba, the leader of the group, told Barry Bessler, chief of staff for the park commission and the city’s point man on all matters pertaining to the six city-owned courses.

Bausch has been part of the restoration project from the beginning.

R.I.P. Tim Rosaforte, 66, former Golf Channel and Golf Digest commentator. Tim Rosaforte, a senior writer at Golf Digest for more than 20 years and a former Golf Channel broadcaster, died Tuesday of complications from Alzheimer’s Disease in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., according to longtime family friend Craig Dolch.

He was 66 years old.

In a statement Tuesday, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said, "The PGA Tour family lost a friend today in Tim Rosaforte, one of the great golf journalists of his generation. Tim was an amazing storyteller and spent much of his energy showcasing what sets golf apart from other sports—the people and the personalities.

He’s got 768 autographed golf balls but hunting for the elusive ’Ben Hogan’ . I’m not sure how and when it started, but I know how it will end: with me, on my deathbed, scouring the internet for a ball signed by Ben Hogan. Perhaps I exaggerate. But not by much.

My collection numbers 768 autographed golf balls, and counting. I have no idea if it’s the world’s biggest or best collection but I’d be willing to bet it’s top 10. In 2017, Joe Galiardi of Cupertino, Calif., made the Guinness Book of World Records with his collection of “600-plus” autographed balls. Not to brag, but I blew past 700 months ago.
