In Saturday's first round of the Montgomery County Amateur Championship
at LuLu CC defending champion Ben Feld admitted that
his round was about as good as he can play. The Drexel University senior-to-be
birdied holes 16, 17 and 18 to post a competitive career-best 5-under-par 66.
In Sunday's final round of the 36-hole
championship, on a course he had played hundreds of times, Feld admitted he hit
the ball terribly all day. After a night of heavy rain, Blue Bell CC played
long and hard. Scores were high and the field caught up to Feld.
It looked like he might come up a stroke shy
until he knocked his 8-iron approach shot to 15 feet on the final hole, then
calmly rolled in the birdie putt to forge a tie with Temple's Paul Carbone.
Feld's even-par 66-76--142 was far from pretty on the second day but it got him
back to the first tee for a playoff with Carbone, who posted a 71-71--142.
Two holes later, Feld posted a picture-perfect
par on the difficult second hole, after Carbone pulled his drive out of bounds,
and the celebration of a repeat victory began.
"It wasn't pretty out there,"
admitted Feld, while celebrating with a large contingent of family, friends and
Blue Bell members. "But at least I am proud of myself for rising to the
occasion and making that birdie on 18 to force the playoff."
Finishing tied for third place at 1-over-par
143 was 2010 champ Mike Carr from Plymouth CC and two-time former champ Rob Savarese from Philadelphia Cricket Club.
Senior Division
In what might have been the matchup of the
day, two-time defending champ Rick Custer from Brookside CC in Pottstown was
locked in battle with former two-time champ Scott Carney ('07,'08) for the
entire second round. Carney, from Commonwealth National, won the head-to-head
battle 74-75 but Custer's two-shot lead from the first round preserved his
third straight title.
Custer recorded rounds of 74-75--149 to
become the first male ever to win three straight Montgomery County Amateur
titles -- in an division.
Buck Jones, the 2009 winner in the
Championship Division and playing in the Senior Division for the first time,
finished third with rounds of 77-75--152.
Jeff Paige, the 2008 Senior Champion, finished fourth at 76-79-155.
Super-Senior Division
Playing in his first Montgomery County
Amateur Championship, Bruce Gladish of Sandy Run CC,
fired rounds of 73-78--151 to outdistance defending champion Mike Giambrone of Plymouth CC by six shots.
Women's Division
Hee Young Park of Blue Bell CC posted rounds 86-81--167 to defeat fellow
Blue Bell member Jen Kim, a sophomore-to-be at Mount St. Mary's University, by
four shots. It was Park's first time competing in the Montgomery County Amateur
Championship.
